About MISU

Information about the Music Institute of Ulster and Sullivan Counties (MISU), whose center is located in St. Paul’s Chapel on the grounds of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Who We Are:

Under the direction of Anastasia Solberg, the Music Institute of Sullivan and Ulster Counties offers instruction in violin, viola, piano, voice, music theory and more for students of all levels and ages. Chamber Music and ensemble experience for violinists, violists, cellists and double bassists of any playing level can be had in one or more of our four orchestras.

Mission:

Based on the belief that music within community environments can enhance interpersonal relationships, self-expression, and personal growth, MISU provides opportunities for people of all ages to develop their varying levels of music experiences in an environment that acknowledges and nurtures the whole person.

Our Philosophy:

Ms. Solberg puts it this way: “The advantage of our many-faceted education is that we have a broad understanding of different teaching methods – methods that have been tested to ascertain what works and what doesn’t work. From this foundation, we have developed distinct ways of teaching. We do not limit ourselves to traditional scale systems, etudes, and schools of technique, but we use them as a means to an end. We want to awaken the mind of the student by constantly finding new ways to apply traditional methods. We want to teach students how to teach themselves, allowing them to become independent, so they can continue to educate themselves throughout their lives.”
